Take part in this exciting dance project while making new friends. Through the use of improvisation, you will explore ideas for collaboration, creation, and choreography. Discover how Pilobolus creates the electrifying choreography that has delighted audiences around the world for four decades. Music will be an integral component of the project, and a special piece will be chosen to accompany your finished work. At the end of the workshop, you will have the unique opportunity to perform alongside the world-famous, Emmy-Nominated Pilobolus Dance Theater in public performances on February 10th and 11th! This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that simply can’t be missed.

In this class, propelled by your imagination, we will enter new realms, discover lost civilizations, and meet the marvelous creatures who inhabit them. Alice fell down the rabbit hole – where will YOU go? Participants of this workshop are encouraged to submit a piece of writing to ASAP’s 2012 Celebration of Young Writers.

Students will learn the basics of the Olympic Sport of Fencing. They will be taught to wield three distinctive fencing swords: Foil, Epee and the Saber. Explore a variety of rhythms and chants from around the world with award-winning Master Percussionist John Marshall. Using an assortment of percussion instruments including the West African djembe, North African dumbek and Afro-Cuban conga, you will learn traditional drumming patterns and create original arrangements that feature both solo and ensemble parts. Rhythms from the Middle East, Central Asia, Brazil, India and the Caribbean will also be presented. On the final day of the class, family and friends are invited to join us for a concert in which we will incorporate and present class material.

Make new friends while learning everything you need to know about putting on a fabulous stage play. Together we will explore the essential components of theatre: learning a role, memorizing lines, making costumes, and building a set. On the last day of the workshop we will give special performances for residents of Valerie Manor of Torrington, as well as your classmates, friends, and family.

This workshop will begin with an overview of the basic functions of a digital camera and basic photography techniques. Next, using lighting and creative composition, you’ll explore basic portraiture, abstract, close up, and still life studio photography. After downloading and selecting your favorite photo, you will mount and mat your fine art print! We prefer you to supply your own digital camera. Participants of this workshop are invited to submit a piece of their work to the ASAP Inter-district Photography Project, which will culminate in a juried show by professional photographers.

In this class we will “travel” to different parts of the globe to discover the artistic traditions of a variety of cultures. We will explore the traditional arts made by people in Native America, Africa, Mexico, Bali, and India. In our work we will investigate different symbols used by cultures to create meaning in their art. We will use drawing, painting, clay, and mixed media to create a variety of art forms from masks to shadow puppets.

Come together with students from across our region and Waterbury through three unique, but related environmental and art programs. Workshops include: planting an apple orchard; exploring a land preserve while learning about mapping and orienteering through map reading and compass use, and wading into streams and brooks to discover the unusual existence of water insects. Participants will make a book to document their experiences through photography and writing with teaching artists Alyssa Robb and Lisa Worth Huber.

Using only LEGO pieces we’ll learn how to build sturdy buildings and strong vehicles. We’ll learn when it’s important to make the pieces stay together, and when it’s important to keep them apart. We’ll learn how to use gears, axles, and motors to create motion. Then we will practice by making puzzles, buildings, cars, and pyramids.
