In this workshop you will engage in the creative process of making dances. The work and play of this remarkable experience incorporates elements of collaboration, decision-making, leadership, and “followership.” You will discover that the Pilobolus way of using your movement intelligence has everything to do with everyday life. This promises to be an inspiring and energetic experience. No previous dance experience is necessary to participate in this workshop, but you should come prepared to move enthusiastically. The workshop is open to everyone 18 years and older. Wear comfortable clothing, i.e. sweatpants, t-shirts, and bare feet or very lightweight running shoes.

The Art of Fencing with Marc Ganych

Students will learn the basics of Olympic Sport Fencing. They will be taught to wield three distinctive fencing swords: Foil, Epee and the Saber. After completing these classes students will have a good understanding of each Fencing sword and will be able to conduct basic fencing with each distinctive sword.

In the Community Folk Ensemble, students and adults will have the opportunity to play music together in a variety of acoustic styles, including traditional, contradance, English country dance, and music from the American Folk revival of the 1960′s and 1970′s. Musicians of all ages, playing any acoustic instrument, are encouraged to join us for this exploration of Folk music in its many forms.
Hand Drumming & Percussion with John Marshall

Explore a variety of rhythms and chants from around the world with award-winning Master Percussionist John Marshall. Using an assortment of percussion instruments including the West African djembe, North African dumbek, and Afro-Cuban conga, you will learn traditional drumming patterns and create original arrangements that feature both solo and ensemble parts. Rhythms from the Middle East, Central Asia, Brazil, India, and the Caribbean will also be presented. On the final day of the class, family and friends are invited to join us for a concert in which we will incorporate and present class material.

Students and adults who play traditional string, wind, and brass instruments will have the opportunity to play the orchestral repertoire together. This includes violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion. Join us in making orchestral music a vital part of our community.

Drawing Bigger and Bolder with Jon Olivieri

In this large-scale drawing seminar, learn how to capture and manifest large-scale ideas. Balance, transition, and compositional exercises will open up the artist to dynamic peripheral representations. Drawings will be made on 4’ x 8’ paper with various dry media. A group critique will complete each session. Resource materials are welcome (e.g. images, books, photos, writing or objects).
Art of Fly Tying with John Potter

Learn basic tying patterns to make beautiful streamers, nymphs, and salt water patterns while discovering the elements of a good fly and why they catch fish. In a hands-on environment you will use all the basic fly tying tools as well as a variety of hooks. You’ll walk away with knowledge of how to use a variety of fly tying materials and where they can be purchased. Both natural and synthetic materials will be explored.
Silkscreen T-Shirt Workshop

Spend the holiday at Road Kill Press to design your own silkscreened clothes, and take home up to ten unique, hand-printed shirts, jackets, scarves, or other clothing! Your prepared artwork must have high contrast. The size of your piece of art can be up to 8.5” x 10” and must be e-mailed in .jpeg format to ASAP by December 1st, asap@AfterSchoolArtsProgram.org. During the day, you’ll have time to explore Kent and go out for lunch. We will depart from Marty’s Café in Washington Depot at 10:00am and return at 5:00pm.

A book class with a GREEN twist! All our projects use recycled and upcycled materials. We will learn how to take everyday materials from around the house, flea markets, thrift stores, and hardware stores, and turn them into clever and eye-catching hand-made books; the final books can then be used for projects, journals or imaginative greeting cards.
Web Design using WordPress with Jerry Koch

WordPress is one of the most popular web site and blog building packages in the world. Best of all it is free for everyone. WordPress is easy for a beginner to learn, yet it can also be used effectively by the experienced web site builder/blogger. Users will learn how to use WordPress 3.0 to create feature-rich blogs and web sites. The course covers both WordPress.com and self-hosted web sites, and includes an orientation, as well as exercises in common tasks in WordPress. A book on WordPress will be provided for this class.
