The Summer Grant Program, founded by Bill Risley, gives high-school students the opportunity to participate in summer educational arts programs and to accept internships in their fields of interest. Over the past seven years, sixty-five local students have received more than $130,000 in summer-grant scholarships. The scholarships are funded with special grants from the Lilac Foundation as well as by gifts by individuals.
Students report that their experiences have been inspiring and, in some instances, life-altering. Some have gone on to become full-time students at the schools to which they were awarded summer grants. ASAP students have participated in more than twenty summer programs at Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA; Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA; Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT; Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and other nationally known institutions as well as at local ones such as the National Guitar Workshop and the Bucks Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp in New Milford, and the Litchfield Jazz Camp.
