Students worked in pairs to plant an apple tree each, and take photographs. Several arborists from The Arbor Services of Connecticut generously donated the apple trees and their time to teach the 5th graders how to properly plant and care for their trees. We figured out that when they get their licenses in 5-6 years, they’ll be able to drive to the orchard, and maybe even pick the fruit of the trees they planted today! There was plenty of time after planting, photographing, and recording to enjoy the surroundings, and even visit the baby chickens at the farm next door, as you’ll see in the photos. The experience was inspiring for everyone, and we had a toast with apple cider, accompanied by poetry readings and thoughts from several of the students, to bring the day to a close. On the first day of the Inter-district Trees, Fields, and Streams Project with The Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust, Lisa Worth Huber (writing teacher) and Alyssa Robb (photography teacher), a group of 30 5th graders learned how to use compasses, maps, and lomography cameras. It was sunny and in the mid-70′s, and we had lots of fun frolicking in the fields while being productive! Thanks to a generous discount from the Lomography Camera Store in New York City, we were able to provide a variety of different cameras for each pair of students. The first session took place in the Hauser Land Preserve, which is part of the Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust, and students were challenged to map out a course using compasses and land markers. We took some of our inspiration from Henry David Thoreau, especially when thinking about how to look deeply at something, what it means to be in a wild place, and what it means to be an ecologist. Students worked in pairs and documented their process using cameras and writing, which will go into a book of the students’ writing, photographs, and sketches at the end of the project. In 2010, Genna received a scholarship to attend the Center for Creative Youth at Wesleyan.
This past November, Genna’s poem, one of 58,151, was published by Central Connecticut State University’s Helix Literary Magazine. Genna is a member of Helix and was also chosen to be one of an exclusive few to get a free trip and stay in Chicago to participate in the Association of Writers & Writing Programs.

Participants came from around the area, including Nonnewaug High School. Students silk-screened their designs (and shared designs with others) on sweatshirts, ties, t-shirts, laptop bags, and paper.


Vanessa and Rachel silkscreened the 2012 Inter-district Project logo on about 100 t-shirts for the IDP participants.
