Our Mission & History

The After School Arts Program is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing artistic opportunities for children, adults, and members of the general public through educational workshops, events, and field trips with professional artists and arts organizations. ASAP recognizes the arts as an integral part of a healthy society and supports, nurtures, and promotes relationships between artists and community.

In April of 1999, the Connecticut Community Foundation, formerly the Waterbury Foundation, invited artists, teachers, and arts organizations from Bridgewater, Roxbury, and Washington to join in creating an after-school program to increase participation in, and appreciation for, the arts. With seed money in the form of a three-year grant from the Connecticut Community, Diebold, and Ellen Knowles Harcourt foundations, and with help from the Washington Parks and Recreation Commission, ASAP held its first workshops in art, music, and dance in January of 2000.

Now entering its eleventh year of activity, ASAP is proud to offer more than one hundred workshops and events in the literary, performing, visual, and culinary arts for ages K - adult. We are thrilled to provide superb arts organizations and teaching artists for programs during the school day as well as after-school, weekends, and during the summer. Since its inception, ASAP has made it possible for over 30,000 children and adults (including audiences and participants) to benefit from this remarkable program.

ASAP Summer Grant Recipients Summer Grant Program

The ASAP Summer Grant Program, founded by Bill Risley, gives high school students the opportunity to participate in summer educational arts programs. Over the past four years, thirty-two students have received $82,700 in scholarships, made possible by the Lilac and Bresnan Family foundations, to attend programs and internships at such notable instituitions as: Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA; Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA; Ellison Ballet in New York City, NY; Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI; School of Visual Arts in New York City, NY, and many others.

ASAP Summer Camp

ASAP's full-day summer camp for ages 4.5 to 14 years offers classes in art, creative writing, dance, drama, music, and yoga. Children also attend performances by professional dancers and musicians. Incorporated into each day is 'free time' during which children explore the playground, read, go for a nature walk or just relax. The program is held at the Washington Montessori School in New Preston, Connecticut for two weeks in August.

ASAP is funded in part by grants from the Diebold, Bresnan Family, Lilac, and the Connecticut Community foundations; with support from the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts; the Jean and Julien Levy Foundation for the Arts; the towns of Roxbury, Washington, and Bridgewater; Region 12 Schools; the Hodges Charitable Foundation; The Watts Fund; Shred-it; Union Savings Bank; anonymous donors, and many generous individuals. It receives additional help from Region 12 and Washington Montessori Schools and the Minor Memorial Library of Roxbury.
